These days it seems to be harder and harder to get kids to turn off the TV and put down their video games to go outside and play even though we have a wonderful outdoor space equipped with things like cupolas and weathervanes. So, why can’t we get the kids to spend time in the yard? You surely want to be proud of your outdoor living area, which is why you may want to start renovating your yard to help get your kids excited about spending time out there. How about renovating your backyard with oak porcelain or limestone? Design something that would attract your kids to the outdoor area. You could also look for gardening ideas in your backyard. How about a vintage Tudor trough or a wildlife table, sourced from web shops like Westminster Stone (westminsterstone.com)? Whatever be your choice, if you are interested in such renovation ideas, checking out stores online might prove beneficial for you.
Additionally, making some improvements in your fencing could help you renovate your backyard easily. If you’re interested in that and searching for a wood fence, you might want to have a look online for some ways that you can achieve this. There’s no reason that you can’t get the kids involved in the renovation plans. Let them help you pick out vinyl pergolas for sale or whatever it is that you’re planning on doing! Once you’ve completed your improvements, here are some great outdoor activities to get kids moving around and using their imagination right in your own backyard!
- Create a nature scavenger hunt! Have them looking for things like a flower, pine cones, a butterfly, a stick in the shape of a letter “Y”. Use images of the items for small children and a written list for older kids. This is a great activity for the backyard or to take on a nature walk.
- Create an obstacle course in the backyard. Use hula hoops, pool noodles, pylons etc. to create different obstacle challenges. Make a game, try it backwards or on their hands and knees to make it more challenging. Check out some great ideas we have pinned for the Backyard Obstacle Course!
- Make a human size board game on your driveway or patio. Use sidewalk chalk to draw the game board and decorate a box to work as a die. The kids become the game pieces moving around the board, get creative with the game rules. Have them complete challenges like jumping jacks and puzzles to move forward on the board.
- Make a game of tic tac toe with some rocks and an old tree stump (a piece of wood or large flat rock will also work if you don’t have a stump). Paint the rocks to look like lady bugs and bumblebees and draw a game board on the stump. I love this activity because it’s an art project and a great outdoor activity!
- Play ring toss at night! You can revive and old tired game of ring toss by replacing the rings with glow stick necklaces. This is a great activity for hot summer nights!
Now get out there and have some fun!
