It’s the perfect season to start decorating your home with a little greenery and did you know, indoor plants are trendy again! Here are 3 creative ideas that are sure to give your home a little spice (and fresh air), all while looking super cute!
Before you begin, I’ll let you know that we used Gardeners Dream to buy seeds for the plants. You could check their wide array of plants and seeds out too! Now, let’s start with the little tips and tricks to begin your journey with indoor plants and gardening.
Mason Jar Herb Garden
You’ll need:
- Mason jars (depending on how many plants you wish to have)
- Potting soil
- Various herb seeds
Step 1
Add tags to each jar to help identify your seeds as they sprout. Be as creative as you want!
Step 2
Fill your mason jars with potting soil close to the brim, but making sure you leave enough room to cover your seeds with an extra layer of soil.
Step 3
Sprinkle your seeds into each jar (pay attention to special instructions that each type of seeds may have).
Step 4
Lightly top your seeds with more soil (you don’t want the seeds to be deep into the jar, since you’ll want them to germinate).
Step 5
Add enough water to each jar to wet the soil. To control the water flow so you don’t over water your seeds, use a spray or a condiment bottle.
Step 6
Place your mason jars close to a windowsill, or wherever your herbs can get some sun!
Indoor Succulent Garden
You’ll need:
- A wide-mouth bowl
- Cactus potting mix (or you can make your own with potting soil and sand)
- A variety of succulents
- Gravel
- Gloves (for sharp edges, if necessary)
Step 1
Place a two-inch layer of gravel at the bottom of your bowl to provide drainage (succulents don’t like wet roots)
Step 2
Add a generous layer of cactus potting mix (or your own mixture of potting soil and sand)
Step 3
Plan your succulent arrangement. Once ready, plant your largest succulent. To remove it from its original pot, turn it upside down in your hand while pulling it off the pot then set its roots in the bowl. If you want your succulents to have a crowded look, don’t worry about planting them too close to each other.
Step 4
Make sure all roots are completely covered, so add soil wherever it’s needed.
Step 5
Give your succulents initial watering, making sure not to overwater since the roots of succulents are very good for providing moisture for the plants. Additionally, if you have chosen succulents like Aeonium haworthii, or the ones that require a lot of sunlight, consider placing the bowl near a window. By doing this, you can ensure that the plant receives enough sunlight, which could be necessary for it to thrive.
Typography Garden
This is a pretty neat idea if you have yet to figure out what to give your mom for Mother’s Day. It’s much more creative than a bouquet and it’s super simple to do!
You’ll need:
- A large planter (long, vertical pots may be the most effective for a longer message)
- Purchased potted plants (you can have a monotone theme, or each letter can be a certain type of colour/flower – be as creative as you want!)
Step 1
Fill the planter with 1/3 with potting soil.
Step 2
Transfer the potted flowers into the large planter. Begin to press the flowers in, and arrange into your letters/message.
Step 3
Clip where needed while filling the planter with soil as you go.
Step 4
Water your flowers once everything is arranged to pack the words fully in.
