For many, the new year involves new goals to work towards and resolutions to achieve. I read that only 8% of people actually stick with their new year’s resolutions…so if you feel bad for not sticking with yours in the past, you’re not alone! There are many reasons people don’t reach their goals – from setting too many for themselves or being setback by small failures. From experience I know how tricky it can be to stand by your resolutions. So, I have put together 5 tips to help both you and I stick with our new year’s resolutions!

  1. Keep it simple: it’s not necessary to aim high when setting your resolutions this year – simplicity is key. It is important to set goals that are possible for you to achieve. For example: eat healthier (this may seem difficult, but it isn’t impractical!)
  2. Be realistic: tip 1 and 2 go hand in hand. Your goals don’t have to be anything extravagant…you must be practical when choosing your new year’s resolutions. Don’t set goals for yourself that are unrealistic and are simply too out of reach because this will undoubtedly lead to disappointment.
  3. Choose wisely: choose resolutions that will have a greater impact on your overall well-being. In the end, these goals will make you happier and give you a greater sense of pride once achieved.
  4. Break your goal down: decide what you want to do each week to help you achieve your goal. For example, if you are trying to shed some weight determine how many pounds you aim to lose each week (at a healthy rate). When you see weekly results and improvements, you will continue to feel motivated to stay on track to reach your final goal. On the other hand, if you don’t see results one week, you can determine what went wrong and progress in following weeks.
  5. Don’t give up: sure you may have minor setbacks along the way but this doesn’t mean you have failed. Setbacks are common and they are no excuse to stop working towards whatever goal(s) you may have. Don’t be so hard on yourself if you slip up, continue persevering!
