4 Tips to Start the School Year off Right!

Every parent wants their child’s school year to be successful. For that to happen, you have to start the school year off right – for both yourself and your child. Here are some new school year tips to make it a great year!

Know your child’s friends

Get to know their friends! Learn their full names, get their parent’s phone numbers and memorise where they live. You never know when you might need this information in an emergency. Listen to how they interact with one another and how they get along. If you see any bullying or teasing, jump in and don’t be scared to tell them off. By ignoring bad behaviour from your child’s friends, it will make them think that it is okay to act this way. If they’re rude to you, they’re probably not who you want your kids hanging out with, but behaviour like this might also indicate something isn’t right at home for them, in which case you’re in a good position to help them. Knowing your child’s friends will also help your child to see that you care about the things they care about.

Schedule a time for homework

For some, they like to get their homework done ASAP and for others they like to relax after a long day at school and work on their homework after dinner. It doesn’t matter when you decide to schedule “homework time” but make sure it stays consistent. This will help your child get into a routine to help make sure there is enough time to complete their school work. Most homework nowadays is done online, so make sure your wifi is up to scratch. If you have three or four kids trying to do their homework online all at once, download speeds might get in the way. Check out these Spectrum internet prices if your wifi is in need of an upgrade.

Get your kids involved in at least on extra-curricular activity

It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it gives your child the opportunity to interact with their peers, make new friends, and have a hobby to call their own. Don’t force them to do anything they don’t want to do. If you love football, it doesn’t mean they do too. If you love music, it doesn’t mean they want to play in the school band. Boys can go to dance lessons, and girls can go to basketball practice – let them try different things and make up their own minds.

Eat at least two dinners together twice a week

This can get tricky with sports, lessons, and long work days. But, it is very important to have your family sit down together a few times a week – this has been proven to lead to healthier kids, happier families, and a better family bond. Get everyone to help prepare the meal to help them understand the effort you go to every night to feed everyone.
